Father's Day

Father's in Canada

In order to properly celebrate Father's Day, we must look back in time to 1909. Sonora Smart Dodd was sitting in church in Spokane, Washington, ironically enough, listening to a sermon for Mother's Day. She began thinking about her father, a widowed Civil War veteran, who was raising six children alone. His birthday, June 19th, was the first Father's Day celebration, and it had a much larger than anticipated attendance. Year after year, this celebration kept growing, until it reached the ears of the US President, Calvin Coolidge, who supported Dodd's petition to create a national Father's Day. This holiday was then enthroned in Western culture, to be celebrated on the on third Sunday in June.

My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person, he believed in me.
Jim Valvano

The traditional flower of Father's Day is the rose. Normally, red roses are given or worn, or if the father is no longer with us, a white rose is the appropriate choice. Although flowers are typically associated with the feminine, men love to get flowers as well! Flowers are an emotional symbol, they are beauty for beauty's own sake, and nothing cuts through the noise of the many stresses and pressures that modern dads face better than a gorgeous bouquet prepared just for him. This is a gift that will remind him for weeks of the acknowledgement of all the work he's done for his children. For something longer term, and for the Father with a green thumb, a plant or dish garden is your solution. A perfect reminder of your love for him; one that lives and grows at work, or in his favourite spot at home.

In addition to Father's Day arrangements, bouquets, and fresh cut flowers, Father's Day baskets deserve a special mention. At Ottawa Flowers, we can prepare an impressive basket arrangement for any dad's taste. Is your father a foodie? No problem, our fruit and gourmet basket can take care of that. Is Dad a more practical type? The cheese and deli basket is a delicious partner for him as he relaxes in his favourite spot. Or, better yet, give Dad the pampering you know he won't give himself. We craft baskets with hair and skin care products, and soaps that will blow Dad's mind while turning his everyday shower into a spa treatment.

My dad is my best friend, my father, and my boss. When I do something that is exciting and he likes it, it feels three times as good as you can imagine.
Lauren Houghs

Archeologists discovered a clay tablet dating back four millennia, with a child's message of gratitude to their father. And he deserves it. Fathers are coaches, cheerleaders, teachers, first aid workers, taxi drivers, and emotional pillars. And in this modern era of emotional intelligence, sensitivity, and acknowledgement, Dad should be a key candidate for celebration. He's your clutch performer, the one who always has your back, and is strong enough to get the job done. And all your fond memories of him should be dignified. Lucky for you, Ottawa Flowers is the best in the celebration business, and it's our pleasure to work with you to make sure that on Father's Day, Dad feels like the champion he is.
