To ensure you’re growing the best flowers possible in Ottawa, it’s important to understand the basics of flower care. Start by selecting the right type of soil for your flowers. Ottawa has a range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soil, and each provides different levels of nutrients for your flowers. Clay soil is heavy and retains moisture well, making it ideal for plants that require moist soil. Loam soil is a balanced mixture of sand, silt, and clay, and is considered the best type of soil for growing flowers as it allows for proper drainage and retains moisture and nutrients. Sandy soil is light and well-draining, but doesn't retain moisture or nutrients as well as other soil types. It's important to choose the right soil for your flowers to ensure they receive the proper nutrients and moisture.
In addition to choosing the right soil, you'll also need to consider the amount of sunlight and water your flowers will need. Different types of flowers have varying sunlight requirements, with some needing full sun and others preferring partial shade. Make sure to research the specific sunlight needs of the flowers you plan on growing. Water is also crucial for the health of your flowers. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while under watering can cause your flowers to wilt and die. It's important to find a balance and water your flowers regularly, but not to the point of excess moisture.
Once you’ve chosen the right soil and environment for your flowers, you can begin to plant and care for them. Start by preparing the soil by loosening it with a shovel and mixing in compost or fertilizers to provide extra nutrients. Follow the specific planting instructions for your chosen flowers, taking care to plant them at the proper depth and spacing. After planting, water your flowers well and consider adding mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
In addition to being a thoughtful gift, flowers can also be used to add a touch of beauty to your home decor in Ottawa. Adding flowers to your home can create a warm and inviting atmosphere, while also providing a burst of color and life. Whether you’re looking to brighten up a room or add a touch of elegance, flowers are the perfect way to do it.
You can use flowers to create a unique and personalized look in your home in Ottawa. From creating a centerpiece for your dining table to adding a touch of color to your living room, the possibilities are endless. The variety of colors and types of flowers available allows you to match any decor style or preference. Consider incorporating flowers into your home through arrangements in vases, pots on your windowsill or patio, or even hanging baskets.
If you want to go the extra mile and add a personal touch to your home decor, consider growing your own flowers in Ottawa. Not only will you have a beautiful and constantly changing display of flowers, but you'll also have the satisfaction of caring for and nurturing them yourself. The vibrant colors and delicate petals of flowers can be visually appealing and provide a much-needed splash of color in an otherwise dull and dreary winter landscape. Additionally, the sweet and floral scents of certain types of flowers can be incredibly soothing and can help to reduce stress and anxiety.
Another reason why flowers are so effective at improving mood is because they require care and attention. Taking care of a plant or flower can be a therapeutic and rewarding activity, as it allows individuals to engage in a positive and productive hobby. The act of watering and tending to a plant can also provide a sense of purpose and accomplishment, which can be especially helpful during the winter months when the days may feel long and monotonous.
In addition to the psychological benefits, flowers have also been shown to have physical health benefits. For example, studies have shown that the presence of flowers in a room can lower blood pressure and heart rate, as well as reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. Flowers can also improve air quality by releasing oxygen and removing harmful pollutants from the air.
One of the best ways to bring the benefits of flowers into your home during the winter is to purchase a few indoor plants or to invest in a small greenhouse. This allows you to grow a variety of flowers and plants, even in the colder months. If you don't have the space or time to care for live plants, you can also bring the beauty of flowers into your home through the use of cut flowers, floral arrangements, or even wallpaper or home decor featuring flower patterns.
It's important to keep in mind that the type of flower you choose can also have an impact on your mood. For example, certain flowers are known for their ability to promote relaxation and tranquility, such as lavender and jasmine. Other flowers, like sunflowers and daisies, are associated with feelings of happiness and positivity. Choosing a flower that aligns with the mood you are trying to cultivate can be an effective way to enhance the positive impact of flowers on your well-being.
In conclusion, flowers have the unique ability to improve mood, make people feel good, and enhance the quality of life, especially during the cold, dark days of winter. Whether you choose to bring live plants into your home or simply enjoy the beauty of cut flowers, the presence of flowers can make a significant difference in how you feel on a daily basis. So next time you're feeling down or in need of a little pick-me-up, consider surrounding yourself with the beauty and joy of flowers.

You can purchase these flowers from a local florist or flower shop, or try growing some of them yourself if you have the space and resources.
Choose a variety of flowers with bold, vibrant colors and interesting shapes. Some options to consider might include birds of paradise, protea, ginger, orchids, and heliconia. You can purchase these flowers from a local florist or flower shop, or try growing some of them yourself if you have the space and resources.
Experiment with different flower types and textures to create visual interest. For example, you could mix large, showy flowers like protea with delicate, wispy ferns or grasses. You can also incorporate other natural elements, such as branches, berries, or seed pods, to add depth and interest to the arrangement.
Consider adding some foliage or greenery to the bouquet to add depth and contrast. Some options might include palm fronds, ferns, or variegated leaves. You can use fresh foliage or dried plants, depending on your preference and the availability of materials.
Think about the overall shape and balance of the bouquet. You can create a more structured look by using a grid or triangular design, or a more organic, flowing look by allowing the flowers to drape over each other. You can use floral wire or tape to secure the flowers in place and create the desired shape.
Choose a vase or container that complements the flowers and enhances the overall look of the arrangement. You can use a traditional vase, or get creative with other containers like baskets, boxes, or jars.
Use floral foam or wire to secure the flowers in place and create a stable base for the arrangement. If you don't have floral foam, you can use crumpled newspaper or other materials to create a foundation for the flowers.
As you arrange the flowers, pay attention to the placement of the blooms and the overall balance of the bouquet. Consider using odd numbers of flowers for a more asymmetrical, natural look. Don't be afraid to experiment and try different arrangements until you find a look that you like.

]]>What's in a color? Why, love of course!
Colour therapy has a profound impact on our day to day here at Ottawa Flowers, and subconsciously it is one of the drivers for clientele as well. Yellow mums to spread cheer, red roses to display affection, white lilies to signify sympathy, and the list goes on and on. So, let's explore the role that colour therapy has in people's lives, as it already plays a significant part in ours.
Colour, as perceived by the human eye, is simply light at varying wavelengths, with each colour having its own wavelength and energy. This is referred to as the electromagnetic spectrum. Going through the rainbow, which is holds all the entire range of colour that can be seen with the human eye, Violet is has the highest frequency, followed by indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and lastly red.
Theses wavelengths have an effect on our bodies as light is absorbed in a myriad of ways. We see light, and therefore colour, with our eyes primarily, but we also receive light through our skin and hair. And it is this interplay between the outside world and our physical selves that inspired the Hindu, Buddhist, and Jainist religions to develop the concept of a human being's chakras.
Let me, O let me bathe my soul in colours; let me swallow the sunset and drink the rainbow.
The basic belief behind chakras are that we exist in two worlds, the physical world that our bodies inhabit, and a spiritual plain where thoughts, emotion, and the spirit exists. The portals between these two realms are located within the body at seven key points aligned along the spine. Each chakra has a colour, and governs specific parts of a person's spiritual life.
At the top of the head is the crown chakra, which represents purest spiritual connection one can have with the universe. Its colour is Violet which has the highest frequency wavelength of all the colours.
In between the eyebrows is the guru chakra, or the third eye. It represents the perfection of the intellect, and pure thought. Climbing down the colour wavelengths, it is symbolized by the colour indigo.
At the base of the neck is the throat chakra. It symbolizes correct speech, and enjoyment. The throat chakra is the colour blue.
In the middle of the chest, is the heart chakra. It represents a person's true nature and their purpose in life. The heart chakra is the colour green.
Over the solar plexus, or the area where the ribs meet the stomach, is the fifth chakra, the navel chakra. This chakra holds a person's motivation, drive, and energy. It is the engine room of the spirit and is the colour yellow.
The pelvis holds the sacral chakra, which reigns over a person's reproductive and procreative nature. Its colour is orange.
And finally, at the base of the spine, is the root chakra. This is the portal that connects a person to the world and stores energy. It is symbolized by the colour red, as it has the lowest frequency on the colour wavelength.
Colour is a power which directly influences the soul.
Colour therapy is the intersection of where science meets with eastern spirituality, as both sides are concerned with the effect that colour has on the human experience. We start our lives in the womb surrounded by the comforting colour pink, and as we grow we associate colours with different feelings and experiences, some very personal, and some universal. So, when we express our emotions to others through flowers, and the vibrant colours and palettes they provide, the impact is more than a visual one. It resounds, and is absorbed on every possible level of perception. The giving of flowers can mean so much, not only as a polite gesture, but as an action with a holistic result on someone's life. We experience this every day, as we build gorgeous arrangements for all sorts of occasions. And we'd love to build one for you.
]]>What do thumbs, walking on two legs, and the ability to dream have in common?
They are the key factors that have allowed human beings to thrive on this planet. It's the ability to dream, imagine, and project our thoughts that make us special. We developed this skill to learn how to survive once upon a time. A roar in the distance allowed us to imagine a predator, and to take steps to avoid it now. Communication empowered us to share a vision in the minds of others, for example, the berries on the hill by the river are delicious and ripe right now. It's quite a unique, and powerfully primal ability. It secretly shapes most of the decisions we make.

One decision both our homo sapiens ancestors, and people today share, is where we make our homes. We envision a space where we feel safe and warm. A place to escape and recharge, a space to raise a family in. So then, when introducing a potential new home, it is the task of the realtor to create a perfect canvas that a buyer can imagine a happy life upon. This is the art of staging. And flowers are a vital component.
Nothing sets the scene like floral design. Bold and bright colours affect us on every level. From the conscious appreciation of a gorgeous bouquet, to the positive impact that colours have on our subconscious. They draw the eye and complement the space surrounding it. That's why floral arrangements are found in lobbies and entrances the world over. They are inviting without being loud, and use a natural approach to invoke calm and well-being. Also, strategic placement within a space can make all the difference in how the space is perceived upon the first impression, and as we all know, sometimes the first impression is all you get. A large vertical line based arrangement can lengthen a space, whereas a full round bouquet can fill a space with colour and warmth. Adding flowers to a home gives it necessary character while still being able to appeal to broad base of potential buyers. A clean, inviting home will lower the number of required viewings, and help you sell for maximum value. Flowers are an unparalleled sales tool.
Curb appeal starts, surprisingly enough, at the curb. Outdoor plants, a well-manicured lawn, full planters, and trimmed hedges promote a vision of a properly maintained and cared-for home. The same holds true for the interior spaces, use plants and arrangements to create colour palettes that evoke emotion. For example: white flowers give a calm sanctuary feel, while dark green foliage soothes warmly. Who doesn't want to live in a house full of fresh, luxurious flowers?
All of the benefits that flowers can provide in staging a home, can quickly be wiped away if you cut corners by using old, low quality, wilting, or dusty artificial arrangements. They draw attention nonetheless, and for all the wrong reasons. Making a flowers a part of your marketing budget is a high return on investment, and set your properties on another level when done right. Let us help you accomplish your goals. We're at home with flowers, let our flowers help make a home.
]]>Your home should be a vibrant indoor jungle! At least that's how we feel here at Ottawa Flowers. Bringing the beauty of nature to our homes and workplaces subtly adds so much to our energy and overall well-being every day. By greening our spaces, we're reminded of our connection with nature. This puts us more at ease, which helps us to not only be more creative, but also helps us keep the various pressures in our lives in check. And we want the same for you.
It begins in the home. There's a major satisfaction that comes along with seeing a plant under your care flourish, grow, and even blossom. It becomes a ritual, heading to the sink to fill up the watering can, talking to your indoor plants, adjusting them, removing dead leaves, and noticing how they change over the seasons. That fifteen-minute process has been shown to have great health benefits, ranging from higher air quality to lowering blood pressure and increasing your calm and focus. It's a labour of love, with great benefits.
So, you're looking around your office or home, picturing a perfect spot for your plants and thinking where do I begin? Well, here are some of our favourite plant types that we have in home and in stock that we're absolutely in love with:
Philodendrons:
This plant is amazing. Deep green heart shape leaves, cascade down, adding much needed colour to any corner of your house, condo, or apartment. They don't like direct sunlight, so be sure to place them somewhere appropriate. This is great gift as well, as it only needs to be watered every few days, basically when the top few centimetres of soil feels dry. Ease of care and lush hanging foliage make this a great starter plant.
Umbrella Tree (Schefflera Amate)
This miniature tree is a favourite because it grows well in a variety of conditions with relative ease. In anything but direct sunlight, and this tree will grow from a central trunk and flourish with oval pointed leaves. Just be careful to keep it out of the reach of pets, as this plant can be toxic to our four legged friends.
Those small pudgy plants that we adore. They are a water storing plant that comes from high altitude regions with a small amount of rainfall. Succulents come in a mind-blowing array of colours and shapes, which make them perfect centrepoints for the dish gardens we love to design and play with, from small pots or large terrariums. Just a little water every 3-4 days and let them bring beauty to washrooms, bedrooms, desks, and anywhere else you need natural flower inspiration.
Monstera Deliciosa:
The name alone could land this gorgeous plant on our list. But this giant leafed plant, with its dark green colour and wide canopy gives this entry a special place on our shelves. Its large leaves look fantastic in front of white back drops, or solid coloured walls. These beauties only need to be watered weekly, or when the first few centimetres of soil feels dry to the touch. Another reason to love the Monstera Deliciosa is its other name: the Swiss Cheese Plant.
This brief list is only the beginning however, as we have so, so many more choices in store to suit any design taste or level of experience. Our top priority is ensuring that no matter the choice that you get only the healthiest and most beautiful type of plant available. We feel it's important that all of the health, aesthetic, and psychological benefits of plants play a part in your world, the same way they play a starring role in ours.

That's essentially why you need a constant supply of fresh flowers for your office.

Flowers are more than just beautiful and lovely products of nature. They can be valuable components of any home or office given that they can uplift moods, enhance productivity, and make visitors feel welcome. Believe it or not, the sight and smell of high-quality flowers can do wonders in boosting energy and improving happiness in your office! That's essentially why you need a constant supply of fresh flowers for your office.
And whether you're organizing a corporate event or looking to enhance your branding, flowers can be a great way of making an impression on both your clients and employees. Well, that's because flowers add character, color, and a sense of a friendly and welcoming environment.
That being said, here are three reasons why flowers can be beneficial to your business and why you should have them in your office constantly.
Flowers can Communicate Your Company's Business Behavior to Clients
Have you ever wondered why the office lobby and the reception area are some of the most important rooms in your office? Well, it's where your guests and potential customers or employees will spend most of their time, alone. Although the conference room is where all the important meetings will take place, the room won't be of much focus once the clients are there.
In most cases, your prospective clients or business partners might find themselves waiting in the lobby or reception area for a couple of minutes and the focus will, at one point, fall to the room itself.
With that in mind, flowers will not only make your reception and lobby look great but they're also a nice and strategic way of flaunting your company branding. Putting beautiful flowers in your office reception is also an excellent way of showing your guests that you care enough about their experience and this will crucially leave them with a good impression of your business. That's not all; flowers can provide an invigorating and energizing contrast to the monotonous environment that offices are widely known for.
Flowers can Enhance Your Employees' Happiness and Productivity
According to a study by researchers from Wageningen University in the Netherlands, floral decorations tend to put people in better moods. In other words, an individual will feel happier and more energetic when they look at the flowers. This is fundamentally what flowers bring to your office: they vitally enhance your employees' happiness. This means that your employees' productivity levels will increase, which should be great news for your business!
Scientifically speaking, flowers can also reduce depression, anxiety, and negativity. At the same time, they can improve cognitive function. Needless to say, these benefits will make your employees more innovative, enhance their happiness, and improve their problem-solving capabilities; all of which are beneficial to your business.
In today's competitive world, sometimes refinement can be of great importance. Leaving your office cluttered and messy can portray a dark and ominous impression that can negatively impact on even the most talented and skillful employees. For this reason, you should always decorate your office with fresh and welcoming flowers that boost your employees' moods, energy levels, and make them feel appreciated.
Flowers can Provide a Sustainable Design with Low Budget
Flowers can help you create a sustainable and incredible office design even if you're on a low budget. Flowers not only offer you the much-needed versatility but they can also help you focus your design efforts on areas with most traffic such as the reception area, office lobby, and employees' workstations.
When compared to other office design appliances, you'll agree that flowers cost next to nothing. You can, therefore, use flowers to enhance your office design even when you're running on a very tight budget.
Conclusion
To this end, incorporating flowers into a business environment is a great way of bringing an added element of beauty, serenity, and elegance to an office space that may otherwise be lacking that extraordinary feel. Your office may be functional but incorporating flowers will make it vibrant and more special not just to you and your employees but also to your clients.

]]>We deliver so many of flowers to hospitals. Probably the only van there more than we are, is an ambulance. Get well soon bouquets, new born arrangements, and all sorts of joyful bouquets to lift the spirits of those in care. Spending so much time there, you develop a connection to the community. The friendly security guard at the front desk, the receptionists at triage, the doctors who move through the hospital like bumblebees over a field of daisies, and our favourites, the nursing staff. November 11th to 17th is Nurse Practitioner Week and we're going all in, as we celebrate our beloved NP's.
For those who aren't familiar with the nurse practitioner role in the health services, tie up your gown, cause these professionals are the glue that holds the hospital together. Firstly, Nurse Practitioners must have a minimum of a Masters Degree in nursing, as well as a board certification. This in-depth education prepares them to work in every facet of the health care spectrum. You can find them in primary care (hospital wards and clinics), acute care (emergency and trauma care), and long term care (nursing homes and supported living facilities). From there, as with doctors, they specialize in a particular area and get down to the business of healing.
The daily role of the Nurse Practitioner varies depending on the context, but they typically (according to nursejournal.org):
Write prescriptions Diagnose and treat acute infections, injuries, and illnesses Conduct and order diagnostic tests (EKGs, MRIs, X-rays) Record and study a patients' medical history, diagnoses, and symptoms Talk to patients about effectively managing their health and designing treatment plans Provide guidance to patients regarding medications, side effects, and drug interactions
But the role of our venerable NP doesn't stop there, and this is what makes them truly unique in health care.
They focus on the holistic condition of the patient.
That means their practice involves a deep look into illness prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and then counselling and education. Whereas a doctor will set and cast your broken leg, a Nurse Practitioner will suggest you limit your extreme cliff jumping, tell you about what type of fracture it is and other possible injuries or warning signs, and then recommend other extreme sports you may want to explore. It's a true wrap around experience, one that prioritize overall health outcomes.
But wait, Nurse Practitioners don't stop there. In order to keep their accreditation current, they're responsible for completing research and publishing studies to keep the health world progressing forward. Nurses have been responsible for the creation of some of the most useful processes and techniques that have saved lives the whole world over. The crash cart, colour coded IV lines, feeding tubes, and sanitary pads, are some examples of the impact they've made in the healing arts.
So maybe, if you find yourself visiting our website or phoning in to place a delivery, you add another gorgeous bouquet or arrangement to your order for the Nurse Practitioner caring for your loved one. They are the unsung heroes of the medical field, filling traditional gaps to provide people with a clear path to wellness. And coming back to the nursing station or office to be greeted by a breathtaking bouquet is guaranteed to end in a smile, and that smile travels, from floor to floor, patient to patient.
]]>On the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour of 1918, formal hostilities ended between Germany and Allied Forces, effectively ending the First World War. History had never seen such incredible violence and loss of life. War is terrible, and on that date, the first great war had ended. So, it is only right that we remember the sacrifices of the brave peoples that paid with their lives for the wonderful world we live in.
Remembrance Day was inaugurated a year later in 1919 in England. And in honour of Canadian physician and lieutenant John McRae's celebrated poem "In Flander's Fields" the red poppy was chosen as a symbol to commemorate the war and the armistice that ended it. So on November 11th, countries all over the world, observe the holiday while holding ceremonies to celebrate and remember past combatants from all major conflicts.
Here in Ottawa, the commemoration ceremony begins at the Canadian National War Memorial by Parliament Hill. It is presided over by the Governor General, Prime Minister, and other dignitaries. The Carillion is played out by the bells in the peace tower, to be heard throughout the capital city. After everyone is assembled, the national anthem is sung. The "Last Post" is then played on the bugle moments before 11am. After a minute of silence, speeches are given by high ranking military officials and members of government. From there, the public lays red poppies and wreaths on the tomb of the unknown soldier. It is also worth noting that in 1994, National Aboriginal Veterans Day was inaugurated to recognize the contributions made by indigenous peoples to the wars Canada has been involved in. This day is celebrated on the 8th of November.
The world has changed a lot in the 100 years since the armistice was signed. So Veteran's Affairs Canada runs a program called Canada Remembers, which informs youth who may have never been touched by war, about the importance of the sacrifices made by the veterans who have come before them.
Interesting to think that Canadian youth of today are three full generations removed from the ravages of large scale international war. And it seems the peace we enjoy today may just be contagious. As of 2018 there is no state lead war in the Americas, that's half of the world in relative peace. And the numbers from deaths due to battle have significantly dropped globally. It seems that, cautiously and to some degree, the world is learning from the sacrifices made and lives lost. We're becoming a more peaceful species. Step by step, and lesson by lesson.
We here at Ottawa Flowers take great pride in all of our work. We take special care and attention when it comes to commemorative wreaths and bouquets for all the reasons listed above. It's not lost on us that a flower was chosen to remember conflicts past and lives lost, and we are proud to deliver both internationally and locally to veterans and ceremonies alike. We always go above and beyond in what we do, because our flowers go to people that have fought and strived. Acknowledging them through flowers is an honour. We help bring smiles to those that have fought, so that we can wear ours freely.
]]>Sending Sympathy and Funeral Flowers
]]>Every single village, town, city, and province joins together to represent a nation that is more than the sum of its parts. And in our world, one facet that has always fascinated our florist sensibilities is the flowers that each province has chosen to represent it:
Indigenous tribes used the wild rose as a healing plant to boost the immune system and cure a wide range of ailments. The fruit it produces is called the rose hip and has high vitamin C content and is now used in health supplements. The wild rose was chosen by school children in 1930.
Beautiful white clustered flowers of the pacific dogwood were the flowers, chosen in 1956, represent Canada's Western-most Province. Indigenous tribes used the dogwood's hard and heavy wood to create bows and arrows, and used the bark and roots to make tanning agents. If you see it in the wild, leave it alone as it is a protected species, but don't worry, it can be purchased as an ornamental plant.
In 1906, school children chose the prairie crocus as Manitoba's provincial flower. It is the first flower that blooms in spring, and is the symbol to residents that the long winter is finally over. However, don't touch it or even worse eat it. The Prairie Crocus is incredibly toxic. So much so, that Blackfoot tribes used it to terminate pregnancies and induce childbirth. The symptoms are bad, really bad, so trust us when we say: look, but don't touch.
The Purple Violet is a perennial that flowers from May through to July. It's the herald of spring in this maritime province. This plant has been used historically in jams, syrups, and teas, not only for its sweet flavour, but also for its digestive and cough suppressing qualities. The Purple Violet was chosen as the official flower of the province in 1936, guided by a campaign between the Women's Institute and school children.
Newfoundland and Labradors' official floral emblem is a wonderfully eccentric choice. The Purple Pitcher Plant is a carnivorous plant that feeds on insects! It was chosen by Queen Victoria herself, so that it could be engraved on the Newfoundland penny. It was used on the islands coins until 1938 when the maritime province joined the confederation.
As with many other territories and provinces, the Northwest Territories chose a flower that represents the first blossom of spring. But it stands alone with its choice, due to the dramatic scale that the Mountain Avens has in blanketing the barren arctic landscape. The crisp white of snow is transformed into a sea of soft flowing cream coloured flowers. A member of the rose family, even in the depths of winter its leaves stay green.
The Mayflower or Trailing Arbutus, took its place as Nova Scotia's official flower in 1901. However, as far back as the early 1800's it was used on the front page of the Nova Scotian publication, on postage stamps, and even on the buttons of the militia members. From the same family as blueberries and cranberries, this flower ranges from pink to white, and takes its name from the Massachusetts pilgrims and ship that brought them to North America. The Mayflower is also renowned for its delicate scent.
The Purple Saxifrage, aside from it's amazing name, is once again a prelude to spring in the frigid arctic. It is a hearty plant, that blossoms in purple, providing an amazing contrast to the grey rocky landscape. In the Indigenous Inuktitut language, it is called Aupilaktunnguat, which translates to "something like bald spots." And it holds a very special place among the tribes of the North. The full blooming of flowers indicates the birthing season of cariboo. And when eaten, it can aid with digestive issues when brewed as a tea.
The trillium, a subfamily of the Lily, takes its name from the floral arrangement of petals and leaves into threes. It blankets the forest floor during the spring to early summers, and it's roots have notable astringent qualities. The trillium plant stands out, as it is primarily spread by ants. The insects are attracted to the protein rich seed casing, so when the ants bring the seed back to their colonies, they eat the casing and dispose of the seed unharmed, allowing it to grow in a different location. Also, it is the favourite food of the white-tailed deer, and provincial park scientists use trillium surveys to measure deer populations.
Chosen as the small island province's official floral symbol in 1947, this orchid gets its name from the shape of its petals. As with all orchids, it is very delicate, and rarely survives being transplanted from place to place. A truly beautiful flower, as it's under petals are pure white, with pink petals folding over to give the bloom its resemblance to a slipper or moccasin.
This beautiful flower is found in wet low-lying areas and blooms during the height of summer. It produces a lot of nectar as well, which makes it a favourite for bees. Due to a mix up in legislation, it didn't become Quebec's official flower until 1999 when the error was discovered and rectified. This flower has a large root system which makes it vital in maintaining the shorelines by the lakes and riverbeds where it grows.
This striking lily grows to a stunning 120 centimetres tall! They flower over the summer months, and due to their height are famous for attracting hummingbirds and butterflies. This flower is prominently displayed on the province's flag. Its bulb is quite popular in Asian cuisine, and is used to flavour soup, with a flavour comparable to potatoes.
The Fireweed was chosen by Yukon as its official symbol in 1957. You can find its bright pink to purple blooms in season all summer. It is a resilient plant, and often the first to appear after a forest fire. It is also popular as an ingredient in jams and other preserves, and can be used to give honey a spicy tone. The sap from its stems are also used by Dena'ina peoples to treat cuts and injuries.

At Ottawa Flowers there's been a running joke for as long as we can remember. The designers do all the work, while the delivery drivers get all the glory. There is no comparison to the look on someone's face when they receive a beautiful bouquet, or arrangement, or gift basket, or anything from our shop really. It's the feeling that someone cares enough to express their emotion in a direct, and immediately emotional way. The unmistakable fragrance, the urgent, bold colours, the connection to nature; it's a moment that needs no words to be instantly understood. It's why we got into the business decades ago, it's what keeps us moving forward into the future. There's simply no substitute.
Flowers are uplifting. Ask Picasso, ask Monet, ask Van Gogh, ask a three year old. Flowers have the power to improve someone's mood, and not only the recipient, but anyone that looks upon them. It's such a simple but powerful gesture to make, and one that reminds us that we're cared for. And in this modern, information driven world, it carves out a special space where beauty can be enjoyed for beauty's sake. It's pure magic, simple to accomplish, and easily accessible.
Flowers can also change the feeling in a room. I mean, who doesn't want to renovate their home or office every few weeks. Flowers are a way to keep the look and feel of a space fresh, as they add a splash of colour, fragrance, and texture. One that changes the energy and ambience of these well-known environments into something magical.
Brighter colours near the front entrance of an office increases compassion and connectedness between people, and that moment of presence relates to lower blood pressure and increased attentiveness. Which can result in greater attendance and enhanced problem solving. Doesn't sound too bad does it?
It's about the value that flowers bring to everyday life. The ability to cut through the emails, texts, phone calls, meetings, family obligations and everything else that a successful life requires. Just a moment carved out by bright colours:
Red sparks feeling of love and romance, and has a positive effect on the immune system. It energizes the spirit.
Purple breathes tranquility into a room. And within that soft space you'll find the room to flex your creative muscles.
Yellow, being the brightest colour, evokes positivity and happiness. It's a symbol of friendship and openness, one that assists in memory recall and helps the nervous system.
Orange speaks to warmth and encourages togetherness. It also ties well with success and focus.
Blue is many people's favourite colour. It is regal and trustworthy. Comforting and known. It promotes peace and safety.
Green, being the universal colour of nature, creates that connection back to the source. It speaks of rebirth and vibrant life. Symbolically, progress and success belong to the colour green.
Pink, stimulates the mind and spirit, slows respiration and the heartbeat. It speaks to kindness and fondness.
White flowers are accessible. They stoke the imagination and draw out emotions of purity and honesty.
That's why Ottawa Flowers offers customized packages wherein arrangements can be delivered in the type, style, and delivery frequency of your choosing. We do this so you can maximize the value that the regular presence of flowers in your life can bring. There are so many ways that flowers can enhance your life. All it takes is the decision to make it happen.
]]>June 21st is the Canadian National Indigenous Peoples Day. It is a day dedicated to honouring the impact and heritage of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit peoples of Canada. And celebrate we shall. In being Ottawa's premier florist, we are located on Algonquin territory, and we can't help but admire the rich culture that exemplifies living in harmony and seeking balance with the natural world. We are gifted to work with nature daily, and there's so much to learn from Canada's indigenous peoples, a culture that has lived on this land for millennia.
We owe the Aboriginal peoples a debt that is four centuries old. It is their turn to become full partners in developing an even greater Canada. And the reconciliation required may be less a matter of legal texts than of attitudes of the heart.
First, a story.
According to the Anishinabeg people, in the beginning, animals ruled far and wide, and everyone knew a great and deep peace. One day, for one reason or another, conflict found its way into the world, and the animals began fighting with one another. The creator of the world, Kichi Manito, was greatly displeased with the behaviour of the animals, and decided to flood the world.
Another deity, Wisakedjak, felt pity for the animals and shared with them the knowledge, that if a handful of earth could be returned to the surface, the plants, trees, and flowers could grow again. So, the panicked animals gathered, and set about their task to save the world.
The first attempt belonged to the loon, by far the best diver in all the animal kingdom. They dove deep, so deep that the sun rose and set before they returned, halfway to death, gasping for air, but ultimately, unsuccessful.
The flood waters kept rising, and so the animals continued their efforts, the otter, then the duck, then the mink, then the beaver dove as deep as their powerful bodies could take them, but they all returned empty handed.
Lastly, the muskrat swam up, and confided with the rest of her animal brothers and sisters, that she has to make many attempts to dive and find her supper, so she wasn't easily discouraged, and time was soon running out. She was underwater for three days and three nights. Everyone feared for the worst, when suddenly, she burst from the water with a desperate splash. Floating on the surface, everyone thought she was dead, but with a sly smirk she opened her paw to reveal a handful of dirt.
I've got tonnes of aboriginal and Native American art, but I'd like even more.
Wisakedjak smiled, and placed the dirt on the back of a turtle, and this became the world we know today.
And this world, specifically Algonquin territory, or Eastern Ontario, is a rich and fertile place. First nations planted and used thousands of different species for food, medicine and ceremony. From Algae to flowers, to seeds to root vegetables, all found a place in both day to day life and during important rituals. Crops grown included the "Three Sisters": corn, beans and squash, were dietary staples. They were often planted side by side, in what is known today as companion planting. Root and green vegetables, fruits, nuts, berries, seeds, wild rice, and mushrooms were grown and foraged. Tobacco for ceremonial purposes was also cultivated.
Plants were also used for medicinal purposes, Tribal Shamans, or healers, used herbal teas, poultices, inhaled vapours, and mixtures that could be chewed or swallowed to cure a variety of ailments. Wood also held an important place, as it was the primary source of construction material for canoes, boxes, totem poles, bows, arrows, and snowshoe frames. Bark was used for roofing, and the sinewy strands from stems was utilized for twine, rope, baskets, mats, and clothing. Tree resin was a water proofer, while plants provided dyes and pigments, scents, insect repellent and for jewellery and adornment. Tobacco, sage, and sweet grass were used in spiritual ceremonies for smudging, where smoke is fanned over the face and head to purify and relieve stress.
We work with plants every day, albeit in a very different way than the Algonquin people. However, in using our hands to craft beautiful natural things that communicate emotion to others, we feel a certain kinship and a deep reverence for the First Nations that live on this land we so cherish and enjoy. This knowledge inspires us to seek a better and more natural balance with the world. To remember that flowers grow from the earth, and the earth is something that belongs to all of us, as we belong to it.
]]>Mother's Day is going to be looking a little different than normal as it did last year. Between social distancing measures and quarantine lockdowns, some of our beloved Mother's Day traditions, like a spoiling Sunday brunch and appreciation gifts, are going to be hindered this year. But that is in no way an excuse to not celebrate the most important person in your life on Sunday, May 9, 2021. Some of us will not even be able to be with our mother's, as we stay home to try and keep our loved ones safe. But the fact that we have to think outside the box doesn't mean that mom should have to do with a lesser celebration in 2020. With a little creativity and a minute effort, we are convinced that Mother's Day 2021 could be one of the most special ever.
All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.
So, on the one day of the year devoted to celebrating Mothers, you better believe yours deserves a big, beautiful bouquet. Because it took one woman losing hers, to create a day designed for celebrating yours.
In 1908, Anna Jarvis successfully campaigned in the United States to have the second Sunday in May designated as a national holiday to honor mothers. Jarvis was very specific in her aims however, so the spelling of Mother's Day used an apostrophe, in order for the day to be dedicated to each family honoring their Mothers, not all the Mothers in the world.
Of course, the world took to this holiday with gusto. And it was rapidly promoted and popularized internationally at a rapid rate. Within a decade, most countries at least considered it an observance, if not a full scale national holiday. In many cultures, it resembles the western celebration we know and love, however in other places in the world, Mother's Day is connected to existing holidays that have religious, cultural or historical significance.
In the Roman Catholic tradition, Mother's Day is strongly tied to the Virgin Mary. While in the Islamic faith there is no Mother's Day specifically, however Mothers occupy a high social status. In the Hindu tradition Mothers are celebrated on "Mata Tirtha Aunshi" and it is celebrated during the full moon in late April/early May. In Bolivia, the holiday is celebrated on the 27th of May to commemorate the Battle of La Coronilla, where women fought in war of independence. Whereas in Egypt it is celebrated on the 21st of March on the first day of spring, to coincide with the new season of birth and renewal.
In Western Cultures, the gift of choice is flowers. Specifically, the Carnation. As the Catholic legends tell us, when the Virgin Mary wept, pink carnations appeared where they landed on the ground. This made them the symbol for the purest expression of Motherhood, as Carnations symbolize love and fascination. They have one of the longest lives of cut flowers, so you can expect your Mother's Day bouquet to be enjoyed for weeks.
The love of a mother is the veil of a softer light between the heart and the heavenly Father.
As almost 100 years have passed since the inception of this holiday, and Mothers' tastes have grown and evolved, so give us a call, and any bouquet or arrangement can be created with Mom's preferences in mind. Of course, you get bonus points if you remember your Mom's favorite, so now might be the time to ask questions, or ask the family member with the best memory for a hint. Trust your local Ottawa florist to create and deliver it for you.
Here at Ottawa Flowers, we take the greatest of care to ensure that every Mother's Day bouquet that leaves our shop is designed to take your Mother's breath away. Awards and reviews aside, we all have Moms and understand the importance of getting your order right, and we consider it an honor that you chose us to help you celebrate such a special day.
]]>Every flower is a soul blossoming in nature.
Floriography, or the language of flowers, originated in Ottoman Turkey. It was well known in the court of its ancient capital of Constantinople, which was obsessed with tulips at the time. Floriography was brought to the western capitals via the work of two women. The English Mary Wortley Montagu, and the Swedish Aubry de la Mottraye. The timing for these could not have been more perfect, as flower cultivation and botany were becoming immensely popular. Joseph Hammer-Purgstall's Dictionnaire du Langage des Fleurs, dictionary of flower languages, was the first published work that associated various flower types with symbolic meanings. This book and other floriography books then spread from England and France, to across Europe, and over the Atlantic to the United States, and South America. This also influenced some of the greatest writers, from Shakespeare, Bronte, Jane Austen, Edgar Allen Poe, to use floriography in their works, giving the new language a true foothold in this era of western culture.
In the Victorian Era, flowers were used in the same way we use emojis today. And in sending a bouquet with specific flowers, a meaning is communicated, so let's explore a primer with some of today's most popular flowers to get you started in the art of floriography.

Remarkably interesting, this secret and ancient language of flowers. Writing poems with nature. Sending strange and wonderful bouquets, to communicate and be deciphered by the recipient. If the opportunity presents itself, and you're lucky enough, try and obtain two floriography dictionaries, one for yourself, and the other for your favourite flower recipient. Share a secret language together, and let our florists act as a pen and paper to send your complex and unique emotions.

One of our favourite things about our work, is repeat customers. Seeing warm, familiar faces and growing relationships over time brings us great joy. It allows us to prepare custom bouquets and arrangements that can put a perfect smile on a client's face. We love taking preferences and tastes learned over time, and then using that knowledge to craft stunning designs.
But you don't get to become Ottawa's premiere florist by stopping there. We've noticed our clientele has become more sophisticated, as well as curious, about the design process of behind the stunning work we produce. Our customers come in asking some very impressive questions, and we've found a new way to serve them. We accomplish this by collaborating and fostering their desire to do it themselves.
We've fallen in love with people's Do It Yourself passion! We get to share a deeper level of knowledge about the intricacies of what you see in our displays. So, we've opened up our studio, and have made all of the tools of our trade available to those with a passion for floral design. The same ribbons, containers, vases, foams, and other materials we use in our daily, award-winning work, are now available to those with a desire to begin their own design journey.
In sharing our techniques, we've come to develop a new-found camaraderie with the DIY'ers that visit us. We both speak the language of flowers. To use the spirit of an event or occasion, to inspire others while expressing ourselves. And what better gift to give someone than a floral arrangement you've taken the time to design yourself? DIY flowers can take any form that you choose. Do you have a garden that blooms and you want to share that with your loved ones? We can provide you with the basic techniques and materials to craft something amazing, and unique to you. Harvesting flowers from your home garden also lends a natural, seasonal theme to your work as well. It's an accessible and subtle touch.
We can also expertly recommend which vases or containers can work best to accomplish your vision, and give valuable insight into where they can be placed within the home, or office context, so that they can have maximum visual impact. DIY floral design, like any skill set, can go as far or as deep as you want to take it.
Also, for the more ambitious, we can work side by side with you if you want to take on DIY wedding flowers. We can provide the supplies and the support to take you through DIY Centrepieces, DIY boutonnieres, and DIY Corsages. Everything from stem threading to proper hand techniques so you don't cramp up after crafting a large number of arrangements.
Think about how impressive your social media news feed will look, think about the looks on your loved ones faces, knowing that you designed and created this wonderful gift they're receiving. We only have one life, and spending time sharing your love through flowers is a journey well worth taking. We're here for you DIY'ers!

Let flower petals rain from the sky!
Release the words from a thousand poets into the first warm breeze of spring!
Sing a thousand songs to swell the hearts and invite the body to dance!
24 perfect hours, painted red, pink, and purple to celebrate one thing. Our favourite thing. The best thing about our incredible human lives.
To say that the team at Ottawa Flowers is excited to help you celebrate this holiday is putting it mildly. We're crazy for Valentine's Day. We eat, breathe, and live flowers 365 days a year. It's our passion made real through the most beautiful medium we can think of. It drove us through floral design school, and it's why we get up and go work every day. To say through flowers what words cannot. And Valentine's Day is our time to show and prove our well-honed craft. It's our championship game, our mountaintop, our raison d'etre.
Flowers are the Romeos and the Juliets of the nature!
First and foremost, there is no substitute for sending flowers on Valentine's Day. It is a worldwide standard. One of the rare times where although someone knows the gift they're receiving, they're still surprised when they get it. It's pure magic. The question then, is how do flowers factor into your Valentine's Day celebrations?
Consider the voyage of a single red rose. Grown in a greenhouse in distant Latin America, it is plucked days before blooming, travels thousands of miles, and is delivered fresh to us. Hands that have held thousands of flowers before, prepared with all the skill and care decades of experience can muster, and placed in glorious unity, form, space, harmony, and balance. This creates a Valentine's Day Arrangement that urgently, emotionally, and honestly conveys how you feel about the recipient. That moment is beyond words. So, we work hard to earn the privilege, and it is not something we take lightly.
Feel free to contact us by phone or online so we can help create the perfect Valentine's Day Moment for you and the special people in your life.

]]>This isn't your office. This is your castle. Your organization is engaged in an epic struggle against market forces. Its strong walls keep your beloved staff safe, productive, and inspired. It lets your clients know that the trust they confide in you will be held in good hands. You spend the majority of your time in this space. Meetings, composing emails, entertaining, and well, working. But we are not machines. We are not robots who mindlessly and dispassionately move from task to task. We crave nature, we adore beauty, and we infuse life into everything we do. Your work environment should reflect this.
So it's with great pride that we've introduced a new service here at Ottawa Flowers:
Living Walls.
Based on contemporary European interior design principals, we choose the perfect wall in your office space and create a living, breathing, thriving vertical garden. First we consult with you to understand your vision and motivation behind how your work space looks and feels. Once we're confidently on the same page, it's time for us to do our thing. We use reclaimed materials, such as untreated wood, to create shelves to stage the myriad of plants that are soon to inhabit your new living wall. From there we take a light reading of the room, and use that to choose beautiful, vibrant, and exotic plants that will thrive, grow, and maybe even blossom in their new home. Installation happens quickly, cleanly, and easily, over the next few days, and afterwards you have a statement piece that has forever changed your work environment.
Employees are greeted with lush and dramatic colour, with proven benefits of lowering stress, improving creative problem solving, increasing productivity, while reducing absenteeism. The health benefits expand from there, as living walls act as natural air filters. Thousands of leaves purify the environment, improving the air quality that was once recycled through long distances of HVAC systems and dusty metal ducts. The extra oxygen boost also stimulates brain and blood function, which leads to a more energetic and relaxed day at the office.
Used strategically, living walls also act as noise reduction baffling. Long corridors move sound around in unnatural ways, adding chaotic echoing to the audible environment. This often goes unnoticed as it becomes part of everyday life, however, where does one feel calmer, in the downtown core of a of a bustling city or in a lush forest?
You might even notice a reduction in your heating and cooling costs, as living walls double as porous insulation. They retain heat in the summer, and release it in the winter. Our living wall design is based on the concept of biomimicry, the philosophy of using natural systems within human built spaces. All this aside however, they have a breath taking impact on the feel of a workspace. Every impression brings you a little closer to nature, and that's something you can use in every facet of your day.
Each living wall we install is 100% customizable and bespoke to your work context. From plant choice, to maintenance schedule, we craft every living wall with your organizational needs in mind. And with our vast inventory or plants, we can change your living wall subtly over time, or make dramatic new updates to follow the seasons. We can bring a forest into your office, and care for it as well. All you need to do take a deep, clean breath and enjoy.
]]>Everyone remembers their favourite teachers. And when you think about it, it makes perfect sense. Kindergarten is the first adventure that one has into the big world away from the comfort and security of the family home. You're suddenly surrounded by a gaggle of kids your own age, are led through lessons and kept safe, by an incredibly kind, and ridiculously patient adult that isn't your mother or father. Your teachers become your role models and guides during the most impressionable years of your life. They stand up in front of the class and indulge curiousity endlessly. A fountain of knowledge that satisfies the endless whys that being a kid is populated with. Why is the sky blue, why is water wet, why are giraffes so tall? The answers to these questions form an individual's worldview, and their impact on a young mind stays with us, in one way or another, for the rest of our lives. And you never know, that life may just end up changing the rest of the world.
What we all gain from teachers is much more than arithmetic, literature, and colouring within the lines. Teachers teach us how we interact and relate with one another. A classroom is like a zoo, so much wild energy and potential. And it is the role of the teacher to harness and guide these little humans, not only to achieve a common purpose, but to do so together. These are the foundations that teach us how to be social, how to empathize, and how to relate to one another. And our progress on this journey has vital benchmark. Teachers create the platform required to make friends. I want to go on the slide first! I want fun immediately! I want it ten minutes ago! But with some gentle guidance from a caring mentor, we learn to delay that gratification for the sake of others. We want to have fun, and we learn that it's important that others have fun as well; we even learn that when everyone is enjoying themselves, it creates more joy overall. That's a huge developmental benchmark, one that we all learn in our early years at school, and then becomes the foundation for the society that we live in.
Teachers are that important.
So, with the end of the school year approaching, it's time to show our appreciation for our teachers. And nothing communicates your emotion better than a bouquet exploding with bright and joyful colour. It means the world to an individual who chose a career primarily based on a passion to teach and guide. By going the extra step, and acknowledging all the work a teacher puts into your children with flowers, you're saying thank you for the complex problem solving, the stress and pressure, and the energy these tremendous people are pouring into your children. The hours they put in ultimately help mould your wonderful children into fantastic adults. Here at Ottawa Flowers, we look forward to working with you to make your expression of thanks simply perfect.
]]>My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person, he believed in me.
The traditional flower of Father's Day is the rose. Normally, red roses are given or worn, or if the father is no longer with us, a white rose is the appropriate choice. Although flowers are typically associated with the feminine, men love to get flowers as well! Flowers are an emotional symbol, they are beauty for beauty's own sake, and nothing cuts through the noise of the many stresses and pressures that modern dads face better than a gorgeous bouquet prepared just for him. This is a gift that will remind him for weeks of the acknowledgement of all the work he's done for his children. For something longer term, and for the Father with a green thumb, a plant or dish garden is your solution. A perfect reminder of your love for him; one that lives and grows at work, or in his favourite spot at home.
In addition to Father's Day arrangements, bouquets, and fresh cut flowers, Father's Day baskets deserve a special mention. At Ottawa Flowers, we can prepare an impressive basket arrangement for any dad's taste. Is your father a foodie? No problem, our fruit and gourmet basket can take care of that. Is Dad a more practical type? The cheese and deli basket is a delicious partner for him as he relaxes in his favourite spot. Or, better yet, give Dad the pampering you know he won't give himself. We craft baskets with hair and skin care products, and soaps that will blow Dad's mind while turning his everyday shower into a spa treatment.
My dad is my best friend, my father, and my boss. When I do something that is exciting and he likes it, it feels three times as good as you can imagine.
Archeologists discovered a clay tablet dating back four millennia, with a child's message of gratitude to their father. And he deserves it. Fathers are coaches, cheerleaders, teachers, first aid workers, taxi drivers, and emotional pillars. And in this modern era of emotional intelligence, sensitivity, and acknowledgement, Dad should be a key candidate for celebration. He's your clutch performer, the one who always has your back, and is strong enough to get the job done. And all your fond memories of him should be dignified. Lucky for you, Ottawa Flowers is the best in the celebration business, and it's our pleasure to work with you to make sure that on Father's Day, Dad feels like the champion he is.
